Aedas and Tongji University officially launched joint teaching project

26 February 2021

In a high-density city, how should we coalesce elements from cultural and architectural heritage; projects ranging from urban renewal, residential, complexes, and present a bracing city landscape? Aedas architects is about to lead Tongji students and venture into this convoluted territory.

Aedas is excited to launch a joint teaching project with Tongji University at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Themed “Eclectic Antithesis: Insertion and Integration in Urban Regeneration”, the 17-week elective course for the 2021 spring semester will be instructed by Aedas Global Design Principal, Ken Wai. The course aims at increasing students’ prospects in architecture design practice with hands-on involvement in real-life projects. Under Aedas’ mentorship, students will probe into the physical and cultural environment of project sites, learn to navigate restraints and fulfill functional requirements, and to ultimately arrive at the ideal design solution. Aedas will also invite two seasoned architects as guest lecturers to offer students incisive insights.

“For young architects, the transition from campus to career development is largely contingent on their practical experiences – to expose themselves to the tactile sensations concomitant with the design process. The accumulation of these experiences will, by all intents and purposes, help them gain a deeper understanding of the architectural design industry.” Ken Wai said.

Ken Wai has always attached great importance to education and professional development. He has served as an External Examiner for the University of Hong Kong and Chairman for the Advisory Committee of the Department of Architecture and Design, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Ken Wai is currently the Honorary Chair of RIBA China Chapter and the RIBA Council member for Asia and Australasia.

Over the years, Aedas has tirelessly mentored young Chinese architecture students through various programs with leading universities across China, including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Shenzhen University and Southwest Jiaotong University. These efforts of facilitating training programs will be continually sustained to usher in a new generation of talented architects.
