Aedas Global Design Principal Dr Andy Wen: Re-innovation of learning spaces should take root in local culture

09 August 2019

Aedas Global Design Principal Dr. Andy Wen and RIBA China Members Group’s Chairman, Aedas Global Design Principal Ken Wai were invited to attend the BEED Asia 2019 DECIGNS Global Learning Space Summit in Shanghai. As the keynote speaker of the summit, Dr. Andy Wen shared his insights and experience in designing learning space.

In conjunction with the theme “Design to Empower Education”, Dr. Andy Wen proposed the design philosophy of “INNO-CULTURIAGE”. Dr. Andy Wen believes that architecture should be rooted in local context. It brings affection to the community only when it is people-oriented and well-integrated with the environment.

Andy took Taipei European School Yangmingshan Campus as an example. He drew inspiration from the unique “alleys” and “courtyards” in Taiwan and the traditional book cases, creating a series of ‘shells’ for the façade design. Andy’s design integrates with local culture, reflects the geomorphic features of Yangmingshan and blends well with the nature.

In the design of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s new Central Building in Suzhou, Andy took inspiration from the “Taihu stones” in Suzhou garden, an  essential element of Chinese classic gardens that he integrates into the design.

BEED Asia DECIGNS Global Learning Space Summit has been successfully held for many sessions. It is committed to bringing together a number of domestic and international principals, school owners and operators, education design architects and faculty staff to build a better educational environment for the future. The summit aims to explore the development trends of school and learning space design.
