CaiNiao Smart Gateway

Hong Kong / PRC

CaiNiao Smart Gateway is located on the landside of the South Cargo Precinct of Chek Lap Kok, near Hong Kong International Airport and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge. The development is the first smart logistics facility ever built and will become the third largest logistics centre in Hong Kong. It will connect Hong Kong to the rest of the world and bolster access to the Greater Bay Area. The logistic centre provides abundant spaces with super high headroom and high tolerances for floor smoothness and flatness, in order to facilitate the latest advanced automated logistics technologies in the industry, paving the way for a new era of smart logistics to take off in Hong Kong.

Due to the triangular, irregularly shaped site and sloping planar building height restriction due to its proximity to the Hong Kong International Airport, the building form took shape in order to maximize the development potential and operational requirements as the brief objectives in the first priority. Care has been taken to counter the traditional mindset of a warehouse as being boxy and enclosed by the use of curves, cladding and colour to soften its profile and break down its mass. The façade treatment adds a slick and modern touch with use of curves and glazing and to reinforce the client’s brand identify via its use of corporate colour. The building design strives to provide amenities for the benefit of the daily users, such as Convenience Store, Café and Canteen. For visitors, a Visitor’s Centre is located on the top floor which extends out to roof decks with panoramic views of the Hong Kong International Airport and spectacular scenery. Greenery in the form of lush landscaped gardens at grade and green roofs & walls are also provided for the well-being of the users and the environment.
