Nottingham Royal Concert Hall

Nottingham / UK

The Royal Concert Hall is a 2,500-seat multi-function hall with adjustable acoustics to accommodate classical and popular music, dance, celebrity shows and presentations. It is linked to the Theatre Royal, which was our first theatre restoration project undertaken in 1977. Both projects won RIBA awards.

The Concert Hall has been designed to ensure good “live” natural acoustics for classical symphonic music, while the space can have its reverberance mechanically reduced to suit amplifi ed music or speech sensitive events. Flexible staging and wing arrangements combine with the acoustic adjustability to provide suitable settings for the full musical and dance spectrum through to rock concerts. Externally the undulating solid and glazed forms develop the themes of the earlier extension to the Theatre Royal. The triple height portico establishes a clear resonance with its neighbour, while heightening a dramatic sense of arrival.
