In 2004, Aedas won a competition to design an international cruise terminal in Xiamen. The proposed mixed-use development consists of hotels, residential & commercial buildings and an exhibition centre. The Masterplan also comprises extensive waterfront communal facilities such as parks, artificial canals and a civic centre. The design concept of the terminal building draws inspiration from waveform generated by the sea. Thus, overlapping roof planes become the distinctive feature that covers the terminal concourse. It also allows for natural lighting and ventilation in the concourse with the aim to achieve energy efficiency.
